CASH ON DELIVERY

by Michael Cooney

An anniversary production

APRIL 23-26, 2015

at the Rome Community Theatre

with the support of the

Carbone Auto Group

Cash on Delivery is a British comedy that is about as frantic, witty, absurd, and hysterically funny as a play can get. The show is a full-on farce, complete with slamming doors, dead bodies, bald-faced lies, mistaken identities, dim-witted government officials, and men dressed as women. Outcast first presented this show in 2000 at the Kulturwerk Naost in Stuttgart, Germany.

Eric Swan (aided by his Uncle George and unbeknown to his wife, Linda) has pocketed thousands of pounds through fraudulent DSS claims. When Norman Bassett (the lodger) opens the door to Mr Jenkins, the DSS Inspector, deceptive mayhem follows — as do the undertaker, bereavement counsellor, psychiatrist, Norman's fiancé, a corpse, the ominous Ms. Cowper and a rather rebellious washing machine! Michael Cooney's riotous farce has all the ingredients for rib-tickling hilarity.

WONDER OF THE WORLD

FEB 5-8 IN CLINTON, NY

Outcast changed it up in 2015 by presenting the first of two comedies: "Wonder of the World” by American playwright David Lindsey Abaire.

Lindsey Abaire, best known for his comedy “Fuddy Meers” and the award-winning “Rabbit

Hole” and “Good People,” created a sold-out off-Broadway hit with “Wonder of the World.” The play starred Sarah Jessica Parker as Cass, a woman who discovers something unspeakable in her husband's underwear drawer and becomes convinced that her life was fated to turn out differently. With a list of things she should have done rather than stay married to Mr. Wrong, she hops a bus for Niagara Falls. En route she meets Lois, a depressed alcoholic who is planning to go over the falls in a barrel. The two become fast friends, and together they encounter a strange couple who are not what they appear to be, a charming boatman who is involved in a mystery surrounding a gargantuan jar of peanut butter, and other bizarre eccentrics.

WIT

Outcast's 10th CNY production was the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, “Wit,” by Margaret Edson. This gripping piece was performed at the Stone Church May 29 through June 1, 2014.

The play chronicles the final hours of Dr. Vivian Bearing, a university professor of English who specializes in the Holy Sonnets of John Donne. Famous for her uncompromisingly rigorous teaching methods, Vivian agrees to eight rounds of the full dosage of an experimental chemotherapy program which, although unlikely to save her, will be an invaluable aid to the researchers’ quest for knowledge. But as her disease and its treatment progress, Vivian learns that it is kindness – not intellectualism- that makes life worth living.

About THE WHO'S TOMMY:

TOMMY, originally a landmark, multi-million copy selling rock album was originally recorded by The Who in 1969 and later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. THE WHO’S TOMMY opened on Broadway in 1993 and was written and composed by Peter Townshend, one of the most influential songwriters of the last fifty years. Townshend adapted TOMMY for the stage, together with Tony Award-winning director, Des McAnuff. The production received dozens of Tony Award nominations, winning five, including Best Original Score.

THE WHO'STOMMY is set in Britain between the end of WWII and the early 1960s. It chronicles the tale of Tommy Walker, who withdraws from the world following a traumatic experience in early childhood. While in his catatonia, Tommy demonstrates an extraordinary ability to play pinball and becomes an international pinball superstar. When he breaks free of his inner world, Tommy becomes estranged from his family but idolized by the public and the press. Coming to terms with his past, he tells his followers not to emulate him but to follow their own path, and he reaches out in forgiveness to his family.

A masterpiece of contemporary American music theater, THE WHO'S TOMMY was an Outcast International and MVCC co-production presented through a special arrangement with Music Theatre International and with support from the Carbone Auto Group and Packy's Pub.

MOLLY SWEENEY

Outcast brought to the stage a play by one of the greatest playwrights in Irish theater history with the rarely-performed “Molly Sweeney” by Brian Friel from June 6-9, 2013. Performed at The Other Side, the actors shared their stories, so close that audience members felt as if they were sharing a pint with the three characters.

Happy, independent Molly has been blind since the age of 10 months. When her husband makes her blindness his latest cause, he consults a once-famous surgeon who, despite being drowned in Irish whiskey, agrees to try to restore Molly’s sight. Both men's need to cure Molly is, for all their noble impulses, a way of fixing themselves. “What has she got to lose?” they ask. Perhaps everything.

FOOL FOR LOVE

Outcast presented Sam Shepard's Fool for Love Feb 21-24, 2013 at the KAC in Clinton.

Fool for Love is a haunting look at the power of obsessive love. Shepard is the Pulitzer-winning author of True West and Buried Child & an Oscar-winning actor.

In a stark motel at the edge of the Mojave desert, two lovers are caught in a vicious cycle of yearning and abandonment in Sam Shepard’s “Fool for Love.” What is arguably Pulizter and Oscar Award-winning writer / actor Shepard’s best-known play, “Fool for Love” is a glimpse of the dark side of life in the West and an alternately tender and violent portrait of two lovers haunted by the sins of their past. After a long absence, Eddie has traveled 2,480 miles to reclaim May, his lover since high school. May’s efforts to make a fresh start are thwarted by Eddie’s attempts to drag her back into the life from which she has escaped.

EURYDICE

Outcast celebrated the Uptown Theatre's re-opening of the big stage to its former glory with Sarah Ruhl's “Eurydice" May 31 through June 3, 2012. Subtle, surreal and breathtakingly lovely, "Eurydice" was a special treat for Utica audiences with comedy, music and dance offering a modern take on the Orpheus myth.

Pulitzer- and Tony Award-nominated playwright Sarah Ruhl's genius has Orpheus' beloved, Eurydice, meeting her dead father in the Underworld, although she can't remember him. Through patience and tenderness, her father teaches her to remember. However, when Orpheus plays music so beautiful that the gates of the Underworld open for him, Eurydice must make a choice.

COPENHAGEN

Outcast presented Frayn's

theatrical masterpiece “Copenhagen” February 9-12, 2012 at “The Other Side” 2011 Genesee Street, next to Café Domenico. Winnner of the Tony Award for Best Play, “Copenhagen” shows us three figures who offer an after-death explanation of an event

Werner Heisenberg head of the Nazis' effort to develop a nuclear weapon, risks his life to travel to Copenhagen to meet with physicist and friend Niels Bohr. Margrethe, Bohr’s wife and confidante, regards Heisenberg as an untrustworthy student, eager to steal her husband's knowledge. To Bohr, Heisenberg is a brilliant if irresponsible foster son, whose lack of moral compass is part of his genius. As for Heisenberg, he is the man who could have built a German bomb but failed to, and his dilemma is at the heart of the play's conflict.

GLENGARRY

GLEN ROSS

“Glengarry Glen Ross” was presented June 16-19, 2011 at the Kirkland Art Center in Clinton. First presented on stage in the early 1980s and later as a film starring Jack Lemmon and Al Pacino, “Glengarry Glen Ross,” a portrayal of the cut-throat world of selling, is just as poignant decades later.

One of contemporary American theater's most jarring tributes to masculinity, “Glengarry Glen Ross” tells the story of four salesmen struggling to survive. Their employers launch a sales contest whereby the man who brings in the most cash wins a Cadillac, and the two who bring in the least are fired. The men lie, cheat and steal with the ferocity of caged animals in the do-or-die Chicago real estate office. As the good leads are given only to the men at the top of the board, the epitaph rings true: the surest route to success in American business is to be successful already. The rules are cruel and unforgiving.

THE WOMAN IN BLACK

THE WOMAN IN BLACK, adapted by Stephen Mallatrattfrom the book by Susan Hill, was presented Oct.28-31, 2011 at the Rome Community Theatre. "The Woman In Black" is a chilling, classic ghost story that has captivated audiences in London's West End for over 16 years and been called the most terrifying, live theater experience of our time. A combination of mystery and horror, with a frightening final twist, it is not a play to see alone. The story centers around a lawyer who has written a manuscript describing the terrifying events from his past in the hopes of purging himself of his nightmares. He enlists the help of an actor so that the story may be played out on stage. What follows is a nail-biter more nerve-shattering than the scariest horror movie.

THE UNDERPANTS

STEVE MARTIN'S "THE UNDERPANTS" was presented in Spring, 2010 at the UPTOWN THEATRE. Proceeds were donated to Save the Children. “The Underpants” is adapted from a 1910 play by German playwright Carl Sternheim, which was originally written as a satire of the German middle class. Steve Martin brings his comic genius to this new versions that opened Off-Broadway in 2002 to critical acclaim. The play is about a bored housewife who is at a parade to see the king when her underpants fall down to her ankles. The event scandalizes her boorish husband, who frets over what this could mean to his piddly job. In no time, a couple smitten men who witnessed the event turn up to try to rent out the single room, in hopes of getting closer to Louise. What follows is a wildly burlesque romp.

THE LAST DAYS OF

JUDAS ISCARIOT

“The Last Days of Judas Iscariot”, written by Stephen Adly Guirgis, was presented in Fall, 2009 at the Kirkland Art Center. "Judas" is a deeply moving play that asks the question: Should Judas Iscariot, history's most famous betrayor, continue to languish in Hell, or can a case be made for his redemption? Guirgis, one of the most passionate and powerful playwrights of our time, thinks that this sinner should be givenanother hearing. A trial between "God and the Kingdom of Heaven and Earth versusJudas Iscariot", is presided over by a cranky judge who has languished in Purgatory for 140 years. The defense counsel and the prosecution call a variety of witnesses to give testimony to Judas' character. "The Last Days of Judas Iscariot" is a modern, gritty play that tackles with intelligence and wit religious doctrine about the conflict between divine mercy and the personal choices due to human free will.

PRESS QUOTES FROM EUROPEAN PRODUCTIONS

(translated from German)

  • Cash On Delivery”, Kulturwerk, Naost
Stuttgarter Zeitung, November 8, 2001‘Outcast International did their homework with this crazy boulevard comedy. Eileen Tiller called forth an ensemble of 10 featuring Michael Peart and Jim Heffernan - two of a fine cast that guarantee audiences an explosive and highly entertaining evening of theater.’

  • Night Mother”, Theaterhaus, Stuttgart

Stuttgarter Nachrichten, September 27, 2001‘Liz Renz as Thelma and Eileen Tiller as Jesse impart to the audience with great sensitivity the intimate and hopeless predicament of mother and child. The performances are the result of intense, psychological work on the part of the actors.’ Stuttgarter Zeitung, September 28, 2001‘…a brilliant production interpreted with emotion and energy by Outcast International. Eileen Tiller as daughter Jesse was cool and distanced, creating a tension that persisted throughout the play… Liz Renz and Eileen Tiller move about the stage brilliantly, with each movement and emotion authentic.’

  • "Robin Hood" (2001), Naturtheater, Renningen

Leonberger Kreiszeitung, August 29, 2001‘…Outcast International presents guest performances of the English-language play by Larry Blamire in fever-pitch tempo and with much "joie de vivre" to the stage of the Naturtheater. It's a feast for the eyes and ears. The relentless pacing, the battle between man and man - not always with the sword; sometimes even with the balled fist - makes it easy for viewers to follow the English text. Producer/Director Eileen Tiller deliberately allowed the actors to keep their own accents - English, Irish and American - much to the pleasure of the audience. The story enchants audiences in this two-act play with 19 scenes which just couldn't be funnier.'

  • "Other People's Money", Theaterkeller, Sindelfingen

Sindelfinger Zeitung, February 17, 2001'Outcast International performed for the first time in the Theaterkeller in Sindelfingen… “Other People’s Money” was presented -- shorter than the version performed in German, more melodramatic, more entertaining, and in English... This will not be the last production for this ensemble. "We like it here," says Producer Eileen Tiller. Lucky for Sindelfingen.’

  • "Robin Hood" (2000), Naturtheater, Renningen

Stuttgarter Zeitung, August 31, 2000'Eileen Tiller, the soul of the troop, is experienced in making good comedies. She brought this English-language production to the stage with confidence. The joy and fun that the 30 actors bring to the stage in this production of "Robin Hood" is easy to see.’ Leonberger Kreiszeitung, September 2, 2000‘Robin Hood and his many friends saunter through the Renningen Forest this week, thanks to the English-language theater group Outcast and Director/Producer Eileen Tiller. Music from the middle ages and romantic lighting accompany the breathtaking tempo of the action on stage.' Fellbacher Zeitung, August 31, 2000‘Nothing in this production by Eileen Tiller is to be taken seriously. This is the human take on the great legend, and also the amusing take. This story is told with blinding tempo, and the ensemble is well up to speed. However, Eileen Tiller leaves lots of room for her actors to expand on their characters.'

  • Moon Over Buffalo”, Theaterhaus, Stuttgart

Stuttgarter Zeitung, June 8, 2000‘Outcast International brought Ludwig's play to the stage with unusual skill... Above all Eileen Tiller commands respect. The Director/Producer has once again put together a tempo-rich and point-perfect production that other professional houses could learn from.' Stuttgarter Nachrichten, June 9, 2000, ‘With their fifth production the 3-year-old group proves their skill for well-made entertainment. Director/Producer Eileen Tiller and her nine actors provide a breathtaking tempo. And the audience has devilish pleasure watching the fun on stage.' Ludwigsburger Kreiszeitung, June 8, 2000'With the Broadway comedy "Moon Over Buffalo" by Ken Ludwig they (Outcast) have landed a highly entertaining hit. One senses from the first moment how much fun the Outcasts have under the leadership of Eileen Tiller from New York.'

  • "Don't Drink the Water", Theaterhaus, Stuttgart
Stuttgarter Zeitung, June 4, 1999‘Producer and Director Eileen Tiller - who can even be seen playing a role - offered an excellent interpretation of the play; the 11 actors perform their roles brilliantly.'

  • "Burn This", Theaterhaus Stuttgart

Stuttgarter Nachrichten, March 10, 1998‘Produced by Eileen Tiller and featuring a mix of actors from many different countries, “Burn This” brings Outcast another step closer to their goal… The heart-felt applause at the premiere offered them much encouragement.’

  • "Deathtrap", Theaterhaus, Stuttgart

Stuttgarter Zeitung, June 6, 1997‘After the founder, Eileen Tiller, moved to Schwabenland, she founded a daughter group which will function in the same capacity as the Munich group. As macabre as Levin's "Deathtrap" was, it was every bit as funny and entertaining.
